Description :
Original Alvin Theatre Playbill – High Spirits (Noël Coward Classic) This rare and authentic Playbill from the Alvin Theatre’s 1964 Broadway
production of High Spirits—a musical adaptation of Noël Coward’s Blithe
Spirit—is a luminous artifact of theatrical history. The show opened on
April 7, 1964, and ran for 375 performances, capturing audiences with its witty
supernatural charm and melodic sophistication. The production starred the
legendary Beatrice Lillie as Madame Arcati, Tammy Grimes as
Elvira, and Edward Woodward as Charles Condomine. Supporting cast
included Louise Troy as Ruth Condomine, Carol Arthur as Edith, Margaret
Hall as Mrs. Bradman, and Lawrence Keith as Dr. Bradman, with
ensemble contributions from Beth Howland, Gene Castle, Adrienne
Angel, Anne Wallace, and many more. The musical was directed by Noël Coward, with musical staging by Danny
Daniels and uncredited direction support from Gower Champion. The
book, music, and lyrics were crafted by Hugh Martin and Timothy Gray,
who also served as vocal coaches and arrangers. Fred Werner conducted
the orchestra, with orchestrations by Harry Zimmerman and dance music by
William Goldenberg. Scenic and costume design were by Robert Fletcher,
lighting by Jules Fisher, and wigs by Bob Kelly and Ira Senz.
Notably, Valentina designed Tammy Grimes’ costume, adding couture flair
to Elvira’s ghostly glamour. Behind the scenes, the production was managed by Jose Véga, with Frank
Gero as stage manager and Bruce Laffey as associate. Producers Lester
Osterman, Robert Fletcher, and Richard Horner brought the
show to life, supported by casting director Nicholas Gray, press
representatives Harvey B. Sabinson, Lee Solters, and Leo Stern,
and advertising by Lawrence Weiner and Associates. The Alvin Theatre,
now the Neil Simon Theatre, served as the perfect venue for this spirited
spectacle. Shipping Available: See “Learn
