Description :

Curran Theatre Playbill – Naughty Marietta (1948 Civic Light Opera)

This rare and verifiable Playbill from the Curran Theatre’s 1948 presentation of Naughty Marietta, produced by the San Francisco Civic Light Opera Association, is a pristine artifact of postwar West Coast theatrical heritage. The production opened Monday evening, May 10, 1948, and featured a full staging of Victor Herbert’s beloved operetta, with libretto by Rida Johnson Young and book adaptation by Milton Lazarus.

The cast was led by Susanna Foster as Marietta, Wilbur Evans as Captain Richard Warrington, and Edward Everett Horton as Governor George. Supporting roles included George Hall as Etienne, Robert Smith as Adolph, Richard Carter as Lieutenant Governor, Elaine Wolfe as Lisette, Michael Fox as Sir Harry, and ensemble contributions from Joseph Paparella, John Daheim, George Cisar, Lois Hunt, and Lois Holmes.

The production was directed by Milton Lazarus, with musical direction by Arthur Kay, choral direction by Dr. Raymond Paige, and choreography by Leona Berezin. Scenic and costume design were by Emil Leffler, with lighting by Norman Spratt and wardrobe supervision by Irene Hubert. The program also credits Louis Lurie as theatre operator and Homer Curran Enterprises for promotional coordination.

This Playbill is not a reproduction nor a generalized touring edition—it is a genuine, production-issued piece from the specific 1948 Curran Theatre staging, reflecting the full creative and performance team as documented. Ideal for collectors of operetta memorabilia, theatrical historians, and those preserving the legacy of mid-century American musical theatre.
