Description :

Julius Caesar – Marlon Brando, James Mason & John Gielgud (1950 Revival)

This authentic and rare Playbill from the 1950 Broadway revival of William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar is a distinguished relic of theatrical history, featuring performances by legendary actors and a production team of unparalleled talent. The revival opened on April 3, 1950, at the Broadhurst Theatre and ran for 123 performances, captivating audiences with its profound interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy. The production starred Marlon Brando as Mark Antony, James Mason as Brutus, and John Gielgud as Julius Caesar, each delivering performances acclaimed for their depth and intensity. Supporting cast included Louis Calhern as Julius Caesar, Edmond O’Brien as Casca, Greer Garson as Calpurnia, and Deborah Kerr as Portia, with ensemble contributions from notable actors of the era.

Directed by the esteemed Lothar Merz, whose bold staging and cinematic approach brought a new vitality to Shakespearean drama, this revival was produced by Maxwell Anderson and Stuart Holbrook, with executive production by John Houseman—a towering figure in theatre and film, renowned for his innovative approach to theatrical productions. The adaptation was meticulously crafted by Kenneth Macgowan, with set design by Jo Mielziner, celebrated for his groundbreaking scenic artistry, and costumes designed by Alfred Junge, known for his work on both stage and film. The lighting design was credited to Jean Rosenthal, whose pioneering techniques illuminated the emotional gravity of the production.

The orchestra was conducted by Louis Gruenberg, with musical arrangements that subtly underscored the intense political and personal themes of the play. The scenic execution was further enhanced by Robert B. Hauser, and the costume design was supported by Mary Grant, ensuring period accuracy and dramatic flair. This Playbill, printed in black ink on high-quality stock, features a striking cover illustration of the Roman Senate, symbolizing the gravitas of the production. It is a genuine piece issued during the original run and not a reproduction, making it a priceless artifact for collectors of theatrical memorabilia, Shakespearean enthusiasts, and historians of mid-20th-century American theatre.

This rare Playbill offers a tangible connection to a landmark revival that brought together some of the most influential talents in theatre and film, symbolizing a confluence of cinematic acting prowess—most notably Marlon Brando’s legendary stage debut—directorial vision, and artistic craftsmanship. It remains a testament to the enduring power of Shakespeare’s work and the collaborative genius of the cast and crew involved.
